To the Government – Honour your Living Wage Promise to your cleaners and security guards

MP Grant Robertson with Living Wage Advocates who are holding a Living Wage banner

In 2017, the Government made a Living Wage promise to cleaners and security guards who work in police stations, courts, Work and Income service centres and other government buildings where New Zealanders work and visit.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many of these workers continued their public service, keeping New Zealanders safe, secure and well.
Their vital and essential work was in the spotlight during the COVID-19 response – even receiving personal thanks from the Prime Minister.

Yet these cleaners and security guards are still the lowest paid people in the core public sector, on pay that in no way reflects the value of the job or is enough to live on.

We’re calling on the Government to honour their Living Wage promise. This would transform the lives of hundreds of workers and be real recognition of the valuable role they play in our public service.

Who's signing

Write your message to the Government below, telling them why you think Government cleaners and security guards should be paid the Living Wage.

All messages will be presented to Minister of Finance, Grant Robertson, to show how many people want the Government to honour their Living Wage promise.

Will you add your message?

Do give these fine people a living wage. I don’t want them to be stressing about money on top of the hard gruelling work they do every day. Maria

Every worker deserves a wage sufficient to provide adequately for their family – at least the Living Wage. This is especially true of our cleaners and security guards who put their own lives on the line during the pandemic to keep us safe. Now is the time to pay them what they ought to be paid.

All people need enough money to have a dignified life, with room for love and leisure, as well as the opportunity to contribute to our society and our communities.

We have just seen how essential the work of cleaners and security guards is. They need a Living Wage.

    Besides, you promised.

If covid19 has shown us anything at all, it’s that our lowest paid workers are as important as any others, if not more so. A living wage should be the MINIMUM.

Time to step up and honour promises to these essential workers. A Living Wage will lift these workers out of poverty and transform the lives of individuals, families and communities. It’s not acceptable to break promises or to continue to exploit workers. The expectation that people should work long hours on low pay is not acceptable. They miss out of time with family, friends or in the community and they don’t have enough money to enjoy anytime they have outside work. Work should lift you out of poverty not keep you there and expecting people to work for that poverty is despicable. Please honour your promise.

Everyone deserves a living wage for the work they do – essential workers like cleaners and security guards are certainly no exception. The government should fulfil its commitment to pay our workers a living wage.

Please recognise and value the working poor in NZ Society. A Living Wage will mean they can spend more time with family and be able to afford the things that others take for granted such as Christmas cards, holidays and the dentist.

This morning on Breakfast TV I saw Rose, a police station cleaner tell how she works 65 hours a week but that’s still not enough to pay for ever increasing rents or bills so she’s had to move back in with her parents. A Labour government has to be working for people like Rose first and foremost. Working through this contract by contract isn;t good enough, we’ve show the govt can act decisively when it needs to and it needs to on this.

I find this Labour party’s abandonment of the working class of New Zealand beyond despicable. The continued attack on millenials is especially troubling from a prime minister that has thrown her entire generation under the bus, and continues to turn a blind eye to the systematical racism in New Zealand while making meaningless platitudes claiming to be doing something while catering to big business at the expense of the people of Aotearoa. I certainly plan to never vote for a Labour party with a Neoliberal at the helm again, I apologise for being so foolish as to believe the Ardern Government would be any different from the John Key’s.
