signed Living Wage for Government Workers 2020-06-21 21:04:27 +1200
These hard working, valuable & resilient workers deserve a living wage. We need to walk the talk and pay people the wages they deserve. Working poverty is real and is the upmost form of deprivation from govt & institutions that may speak of the value of this work but fail to acknowledge it in ways that really make a difference to lives with a living wage. Please! This is only a small part of what is needed in the broader sense but is such a significant one. Please don’t go back on your promises, please support those who need it most, please support those who deserve it most. LIVING WAGE NOW!

To the Government – Honour your Living Wage Promise to your cleaners and security guards

MP Grant Robertson with Living Wage Advocates who are holding a Living Wage banner

In 2017, the Government made a Living Wage promise to cleaners and security guards who work in police stations, courts, Work and Income service centres and other government buildings where New Zealanders work and visit.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many of these workers continued their public service, keeping New Zealanders safe, secure and well.
Their vital and essential work was in the spotlight during the COVID-19 response – even receiving personal thanks from the Prime Minister.

Yet these cleaners and security guards are still the lowest paid people in the core public sector, on pay that in no way reflects the value of the job or is enough to live on.

We’re calling on the Government to honour their Living Wage promise. This would transform the lives of hundreds of workers and be real recognition of the valuable role they play in our public service.

Write your message to the Government below, telling them why you think Government cleaners and security guards should be paid the Living Wage.

All messages will be presented to Minister of Finance, Grant Robertson, to show how many people want the Government to honour their Living Wage promise.
