Below is a summary of a our written submission to the council and link to download the full submission.
Summary
-
Porirua City Council should adopt the Living Wage for all staff and contractors providing services to the Council.
-
All the hard-working people at Porirua City Council should be paid enough to live a decent life. Working for the minimum wage doesn’t provide that. The Living Wage does.
-
The Council can to choose to make this happen. In doing so, it can present a vision for our City to aspire to where everyone can afford to live a decent life.
-
The Living Wage will directly contribute to the Council’s strategic goals around putting children at the centre of city decisions, being a prosperous and growing city and ensuring a great village experience.
-
The cost will be lower than expected - in fact raising all staff to at least the Living Wage immediately will only cost ratepayers five cents a day. A phased introduction would lower this further.
